Sawadee Everyone,
If this email looks different than previous issues, congratulations, you have a keen eye. Apparently the Elon Musk/Twitter thingy has resulted in Twitter shutting down it’s Revue newsletter platform that we were using and I’ve had to change newsletter providers.
This is from the email I received this week.
We’ll cut to the chase: from January 18, 2023, it will no longer be possible to access your Revue account. On that date, Revue will shut down and all data will be deleted. This has been a hard decision because we know Revue has a passionate user base, made up of people like you.
I decided to go with SubStack which means that it may take me an issue or two to learn all of the ins and outs of the new platform. Bear with me :-)
And if you have any feedback on this new platform, format of the newsletter, or anything else, please go to r/CannabisThailand and leave me some feedback. I’m always looking for ways to make this newsletter as useful as possible.
The big news in cannabis this week was that people buying cannabis in Thailand will soon have to show an ID card at the time of purchase.
It’s unclear if this applies to Thais only or if it will apply to everyone. The first stories I saw on this said that only Thais would be required to insert their ID card into a reader for each sale.
As is often the case in Thai journalism, other media sources omitted the part about Thais and just said that dispensaries would be required to collect IDs from buyers.
Since few non-Thai citizens have a Thai ID card, the first media reports about this requirement only applying to Thais, makes the most sense, but we’ve seen similar things happen during Covid where one could only register for a vaccination appointment with a Thai ID card, and only later did they add the ability to use a passport number.
So, the first reports may be true AND later reports indicating everyone must give an ID (not necessarily a Thai ID) may also be true.
While this can be used for all sorts of purposes, it seems tailored to track:
How much weed is actually being sold at retail
Provide the Thai government bragging points (i.e. “Thailand has generated 1 billion baht in sales”)
Give the powers that be some comfort that weed isn’t being sold to minors (or pregnant women, or women breast feeding)
Track whether usage per user is increasing, decreasing, or flat, giving indications of addiction or other problems
Track how much weed is disappearing into the grey markets
It’s sort of a “Seed to Sale” model without all of the unnecessary oversight which only adds costs and does little to actually control the grey market in other countries.
We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
Cheers,
u/CannabisThailandMod
