Sawadee Everyone,
Thailand has been holding 420 events for at least the last 7 or 8 years but this April 20th was somewhat of a letdown considering it is the first 420 event since legalization.
While some shops held their own small 420 events, the big blowout events had some of that Songkran cold water splashed on them.
Khao San Road had planned a big event but were told to cancel it by the Department of Public Health (headed by the guy most responsible for legalizing cannabis).
Another event announced that they were going ahead but with a no smoking policy.
Highland who had previously organized most of the big 420 events in the past was eerily silent about any sort of 420 event this year.
So what was actually happening?
It seems that Minister of Public Health, Mr. Anutin understood how these events would be used by the opposition and tried to have them shut down so as to avoid the front pages of every Thai newspaper showcasing the unregulated recreational use of cannabis.
While unfortunate, it was likely the smart move.
With elections just weeks away, the last thing the Bhumjaithai Party needs is bad press regarding unregulated public use of cannabis.
Will 2024 be the year for a big 420 event in Thailand? We can only hope.
Cheers,
