Sawadee Everyone,
This week we saw two separate police enforcements of the cannabis laws. One was in Phuket where the details are a bit sketchy but it seems like police busted some people selling cannabis illegally, and the other was in Bangkok where the police busted a few of the food trucks (turned weed trucks) that were parked on Sukhumvit Soi 11 for operating without proper licenses.
Even though this doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of people operating illegally, this feels like good news for the legal shop owners.
In speaking to some dispensary owners in recent weeks, I’ve really been impressed with how some of them have been organizing as a community. There are several online groups (mostly in Thai) where dispensary owners have been sharing tips on everything from how to fill out various government forms to passing along info on suspicious vendors/customers.
I’ve also been visiting some grow operations and it’s like night and day from the last trips I made back in September. Whereas in September everything seemed chaotic and it felt like everyone was just winging it, now they seem a lot more organized and have processes in place.
So much of the focus on the industry by the media has been on foreign side of the business (Cookies, Kush House, etc) or the big Thai players (Sukhumweed, Highland Cafe) but there are a lot of small Thai operators that have been figuring out the business the hard way via trial and error and it looks like things are starting to come together for many of them.
This is what makes me optimistic when I read all of the political drama going on.
There is a lot happening below the surface and definitely outside of the spotlight of the main English language media sources, but it’s beginning to come together.
Cheers,
