Sawadee Everyone,
Well, buckle up, folks! Thai politics has entered another chapter of its never-ending soap opera - less "Game of Thrones," more "The Office," Thai style.
First off, the rumor mill is whirling faster than a fidget spinner. The Move Forward Party (MFP) is allegedly making moves on the Bhumjaithai Party (BJT), though Anutin, BJT's charming leader, adamantly denies it.
Meanwhile, everyone's wondering if Pita, the MFP's prized candidate, can snag the big PM job. There's a bit of a kerfuffle over his iTV shares, but it's largely regarded as a tempest in a teapot. Yes, he owns a media company, but it's as functioning as a solar-powered torch at night.
Yet, victory isn't being FedExed to his door just yet. Pita is 63 votes shy of the golden PM ticket, and there's plenty of time for late-night, secret-handshake deals to flip the script.
The Pheu Thai Party (PT) and BJT have been spotted together in London, sparking rumors of potential alliances. The math works out – an alliance between BJT and either MFP or PT could either land Pita the PM spot or secure it for PT. A classic political Mexican standoff, if you will.
The twist in the tale is the PT's reputation. The old guard might snub their noses at PT's antics, but begrudgingly admit they have the chops to run the show. A PT/BJT government isn't completely off the table and might have more senators raising their hands in favor.
Meanwhile, the Speaker's position is caught in a tug of war between MFP and PT. The Speaker’s role usually goes to someone that is well-liked by all sides, very knowledgeable in parliamentary procedure, and has substantial legislative experience. MFP’s Speaker candidate has none of those things.
Adding to MFP's woes is their all-or-nothing bet on Pita. If he's disqualified or falls short, they're left looking like a one-horse town. PT, in contrast, is juggling three potential PM candidates, giving them a backup plan or two.
We've got the Speaker vote expected to happen on or around July 6, followed by the PM vote on or around July 13. So get the popcorn ready. In the grand tradition of Thai politics, we'll be voting till we find someone who wins over the magic 50% majority. Till then, enjoy the show!
Cheers,
