  • Why It Matters: Thailand’s commitment to international drug control treaties is reasserted with a focus on medical and research use of cannabis, countering recreational misuse.
  • The Big Picture: Reflects Thailand’s broader efforts in drug reform, emphasizing health-led approaches and rigorous law enforcement against drug trafficking.
  • What To Watch: Thailand’s strategy to balance cannabis for medical purposes while preventing its recreational use could set a precedent for global drug policy reform.

VIENNA, AUSTRIA – In a recent declaration at the 67th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna, Austria, Thailand’s Justice Minister, POL. LT. GEN. TAWEE SODSANG, reaffirmed Thailand’s stance against the recreational use of cannabis, highlighting the country’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations under international drug control conventions.

Following significant drug law reforms in late 2021, which aimed to address the drug situation through public health-led strategies, Thailand has made clear its intention to work collaboratively across all sectors of society to eliminate influential figures and narcotics from Thai communities. Emphasizing the principle of “turning users into patients,” the government supports effective and widespread access to treatment and rehabilitation services to reintegrate individuals into society and the workforce.

Moreover, producers and dealers are to face strict legal actions, including asset seizures to disrupt the drug trade cycle. Diplomatic negotiations with neighboring countries are also underway to control cross-border drug trafficking and permanently remove citizens from the drug trade loop.

The government pledges to follow evidence-based approaches to allow cannabis use strictly for medical, therapeutic, and research purposes. POL. LT. GEN. TAWEE promised on behalf of Thailand at the CND that the country would make tangible progress in reducing drug-related issues within a year by ensuring drug users, especially those with psychiatric conditions, access to proper treatment and rehabilitation. Additionally, efforts will be intensified to curb drug smuggling and chemical precursors across borders and to enhance international cooperation to tackle challenges in the Golden Triangle region, aiming for a safe and secure society.
