Following approval from the Food and Drug Administration, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has turned over 1 ton of seized marijuana to the Department of Thai Traditional, Alternative Medicine and the Department of Medical Sciences to be turned into an estimated 660,000 5cc bottles of cannabis oil, with another 5 kilograms being set aside for medical experiments.

Niyom Termsrisuk, ONCB secretary-general, said that both receiving departments will process the marijuana for extraction using traditional methods.

Niyom also noted that Thailand’s plans to allow cannabis farming did not violate the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. He said he has received assurances that Thailand is still in full compliance with both agreements.
